The man who was driving the tipper truck that collided head-on with a tanker truck on N14 near Muldersdrift offramp has died in hospital.

According to his employer, Renico Construction, Jan Ntepe was airlifted to hospital after sustaining serious injuries during the crash.

The confirmed that Ntepe succumbed to his injuries in hospital later the same day on Thursday 03 September.

“It is with sadness that we inform you of the passing of one of our own in the Renico family, Jan Ntepe,” the company wrote on Facebook.

“Jan was involved in a head-on collision, Thursday 3 September, while en route to Janho Quarry. A tyre burst of another truck travelling in the opposite direction, causing it to crash through the barrier and colliding head-on with Jan’s truck,” the company further stated.

According to Netcare 911, Jan was severely entrapped in his truck following the crash. The fire department had to employ hydraulic tools to free him from the wreckage.

“After being stabilised and owing to the serious nature of his injuries, a Netcare 911 helicopter airlifted him to a hospital for further treatment,” stated Netcare 911’s Shawn Herbst in a statement.

Renico indicated that he was airlifted to Netcare Milpark Hospital but unfortunately passed on hours later due to the seriousness of his injuries.

“Jan was part of the Renico family for the past 12 years. During this time, he drove the big Renico staff bus, did duty on our 20 Ton trucks as well as our Tipper trucks.
