Sbusiso Siyaya Truck driver in Pongola horrific crash makes first court appearance

The truck driver who was behind the wheel of a DAF truck which crashed into a bakkie killing 21 people on the N2 in Pongola on Friday has made his first appearance in court today.

Sibusiso Siyaya (28) initially fled the scene of the accident scene but handed himself over to authorities on Saturday.

He will now face 21 charges of culpable homicide.

Most of the victims in Friday’s accident were primary school children between the ages of 5 and 12.

Dashcam footage of the accident shows Siyaya’s truck overtaking another truck on a double barrier line before smashing into a bakkie.

Siyaya will remain in custody until the 26th of September when he is expected to apply for bail in the Pongola Magistrates Court.

The court did not allow any footage of photographs to be taken during Monday’s proceedings.
