The Mooi River toll area is currently besieged by protest action. All major routes through Mooi River that include N3, R622 and R103 are affected and motorists are advised to stay away from them.
The protesters have allegedly set a truck on fire just after the toll gate on N3 west.

Authorities have suggested that motorists stay off N3 from Durban to Johannesburg and alternatively use the N2 via Pongola to get to Gauteng.
Another option is to use the Stanger/KwaDukuza route. From Pietermaritzburg go towards Greytown, along the route take the turn to Muden, it will take you to Colenso or Ladysmith. From there either use R74 or N11 to get back onto N3.
