Two men killed while changing flat tyre hit and run

Durban – Two men were killed during a hit-and-run while they were changing a car tyre near Blue Lagoon on Wednesday afternoon.

Phoenix resident Sumeer Maharaj was helping his friends change a flat tyre on the M4 Ruth First Highway near the Blue Lagoon on-ramp towards Durban North when they were struck by a black car.

The car drove off without stopping, said police spokeswoman Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala.

Maharaj’s friend, only known as Praveen Singh, died in hospital on Thursday morning.

“A case of culpable homicide was opened at Durban Central police station for further investigation,” said Gwala.

When contacted for comment, the Maharaj family said they were grieving and traumatised.

A family friend identified only as Duran (surname not given) said the vehicle that fled the scene was believed to be a Kia Coupe.

“Sumeer was assisting his friend in changing a tyre on the yellow lane just before the Blue Lagoon on-ramp to join the freeway to Umhlanga. He was killed instantly.

“Unfortunately no one saw the car registration plates. This was a heinous crime,” he said.

Anyone who may have information or witnessed the incident is asked to contact the police, either Major JS Govender on 082 556 7747 or Warrant officer T Moodley 073 743 0677 of Durban Central police.
